Cherán earrings--Hope and Inspiration

Cheran earrings indigenous

We're so happy our silver earrings from Cherán are growing in popularity, and it's time for me to re-stock them again! I wore my Cheran earrings to the "No Kings" protest I attended in San Francisco-- not just because they are lightweight and beautiful to look at-- but to inspire me. Mexico By Hand has shared with customers that these hoops are the style most commonly worn among the Purépecha women in Michoacán-- the indigenous group that produces most of the artesanía (crafts) we carry. But most North Americans don't know Cheran's other claim to fame. In 2011 the town fought the cartels and won, and they've been successfully autonomous (self-governing) ever since. The community's forests and water are protected, crime is greatly reduced, and their story has been an inspiration to other indigenous communities throughout Mexico.

"In the state of Michoacan, Cheran has become an oasis of hope - its peace and security a stark contrast to the fear that still dominates neighbouring communities. So why has it succeeded - thrived even - in such a cruel but beautiful region?  Solidaridad - solidarity." --BBC News  https://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-37612083

In solidarity with all who struggle for peace and justice in Mexico and here in the U.S. I proudly wear my beautiful Cheran earrings with hope for a better future.

Above are some Purépecha artesanas wearing Cheran earrings.
